BdREN Expands eduroam Service to Multiple Airports, Enhancing Global Academic Connectivity
In a significant advancement for academic and research collaboration, Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) has successfully expanded its eduroam service across multiple international airports in Bangladesh. Following the trailblazing launch of eduroam at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) – the first airport in South Asia to offer this service – eduroam is now made available in previously uncovered areas (CIP terminal, EBL Lounges, etc.) within HSIA, as well as at two new international airports in the country namely Osmani International Airport in Sylhet and Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong with effect from 10 September 2024.
A Pioneering Milestone for Academic Connectivity in Bangladesh
The initial launch of eduroam at HSIA on May 31, 2023, marked a groundbreaking moment for Bangladesh, establishing the country as a regional leader in academic connectivity. The service, which allows students, researchers, and faculty members to connect seamlessly to a global WiFi network, supports uninterrupted academic activities such as remote lectures, accessing research resources, and collaboration with peers. This development underscores Bangladesh's commitment to fostering education and research on an international scale.
Expanding Coverage and Accessibility
With the recent expansion, BdREN, in collaboration with Aamra Networks Limited and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), has extended eduroam’s coverage to include airport lounges, previously uncovered WiFi areas, and EBL lounges at HSIA. Additionally, travelers passing through Sylhet and Chittagong can now benefit from the same high-speed, reliable connectivity.
BdREN’s efforts have now turned toward the next ambitious phase: implementing eduroam at local airports across Bangladesh. This will bring the same level of connectivity to a broader audience, enabling academic professionals to remain connected no matter where they travel within the country.
Looking Ahead: Local Airports in Focus
With the success at international hubs, BdREN aims to roll out eduroam services to local airports in Bangladesh, further extending the reach of this global education network. By creating a seamless, accessible digital environment, Bangladesh is poised to strengthen its role as a hub for research, education, and international collaboration.
