
Presentation on Identity Federation at BUET
A presentation session was organized at the Distance Learning Theater, IICT, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology [BUET] on 02 April 2023. In the demonstration session the ease and benefits of federated access was presented thrusting particular focus on journal access using the power of federation.
The session was attended by a few of the high officials of BUET including Directors of both IICT and ICT cells, representatives from BUET library and System Administrator, BUET.
It was revealed to the audience that BdREN has already established a federation titled “TIGERfed” for research and education community in Bangladesh. The said federation is able to integrate multiple “Service providers” (SPs) and “Identity Providers” (IdPs) in the same platform leading to improved security, single-sign-on (SSO) facility and most notably ease of both “On-campus” and “Off-campus” access.
In the session, the ease and secured access of Journals for the faculties and researchers of BUET was specifically demonstrated and the advantages of such access over traditional access methodology was presented. It was also mentioned that once BUET becomes part of the federation, the access to other services such as- Zoom, LMS and Cloud Storage can also be made available.
The concept of federation was well-understood by the audience. At the end of the presentation session, Director, IICT advised CEO, BdREN to send a letter to honorable Vice-Chancellor, BUET seeking his permission for his approval in allowing BUET to join TIGERfed. Once the approval is given, the implementation, configuration and testing of BUET’s faculty members’ access to the journals using federation may be accomplished.
